# How to write a music bio
For social media bios, keep it short. You can try describing yourself in three words, using emojis to help the sense.[^1] Alternatively, write 1-2 sentences.[^2] There's a lot of noise on the internet, so be brief.[^1]
Have a long-form bio of 500-700 words for your website and a short-form bio of 250-350 words for Spotify and other online platforms. Write in third-person,[^2] which helps journalists copy and paste and helps readers engage more.[^3] This helps SEO.[^4] Write with journalists and the public in mind.[^5]
This is not a life biography, but a biography of your work, particularly your most recent work.[^3] "It doesn’t matter that the band started in Chicago in 1984," says Cary Baker.[^5] For an EPK bio, start by describing the most current project.[^5] If you don't have that, start with your style of music (see [[How to be more concise when describing your music]]) and influences.[^4] You can also start with answering why you're an artist.[^2] What led you to making your music? How did you as an artist come to be? What themes do you explore?[^6] See [[How to tell your story]]. Avoid superlatives, like "unique" or "best yet." Be specific. Ask yourself, could this describe any number of artists?[^5] Whatever your hook is, it has to compel your target audience. Don't be afraid to turn off everybody else.[^3]
Then a third of the way through, you can get into the history.[^5] Include bands or artists you've played with and accomplishments,[^4] like prominent festivals and venues, award nominations, radio play, brand endorsements, or big artists you've opened for.[^2] Media quotes can lend credibility. These can also be from a venue owner, a fellow musician.[^4] It can be effective to end with a quippy quote.[^5]
To help generate ideas, you can do the following. Write a short paragraph about each of your current songs, looking for common themes in your work. Write down your influences and what it is about them (see [[Make a creative family tree]]). Jot down your big achievements/awards/credits.[^3]
