*Classes are the backbone of most characters granting the majority of their features and traits. Each class has its central identity which steers its strengths, weaknesses, and how it's flavored. In many situations subclasses grant additional control over how each class feels to play.*

#### Understanding Class Pages
Your level in a given class dictates what features you gain from it as well as the strength of these features. Often this is indicated by a class feature table but each feature states at what level you gain it, and if it grows in power as you level up.
At first level when you pick your starting class, you gain additional benefits. The hit points you gain are increased[^firsthitpoints] and you are granted additional proficiencies[^profs].
[^firsthitpoints]: As detailed under "Hit Points at 1st Level"
[^profs]: As detailed under "Proficiencies"
Many class pages will have additional sections beyond a list of features that detail other mechanics and options presented by the class.

#### Leveling Up
Character progression is commonly measured by your level; the total number of levels you have in classes. This is used as a prerequisite in some places and referenced with a few rules such in how your [[Proficiency]] bonus is determined. When you level up you may put your new level into a class you have or look into **multiclassing**.
If you increase your level in a class you simply check the check the features granted by that class to see if anything changes. You will generally gain hit points, hit dice, a new feature, or an improvement to an old feature.
###### Multiclassing
Sometimes character branch out, picking up a levels in classes other than their starting class. All classes a character has are treated the same; tracking your level in each class to determine what features you gain and their strength. A character cannot have more unique classes than half their proficiency bonus plus 1.
However, when you gain a new class instead of gaining all the proficiencies it lists, you instead pick one Skill and one Saving Throw offered by the class.
Some abilities such as Spellcasting have unique rules about how to handle having multiple classes that grant it. A full list of these interactions can be found here.

## Prestige Classes
Prestige classes are a special type of class that has fewer levels, offers a less rounded set of abilities, but aims to provide a very flavorful way for a character to specialize and branch out.
Unlike regular classes they have prerequisites but in return grant all of their listed proficiencies regardless of when you take them.
Some character might be able to take a prestige class as their first class, if this happens, the first regular class that character takes is treated as their starting class granting it's full list of proficiencies and at 1st level hit point boost.
