# Characters Characters are one of the most important elements of playing Apotheosis. Through them you interact with the story, facing impossible odds with an uncrushable will to at least try. This page will aid the process of creating characters and exploring what can be done. There is a [[Character Sheet]] provided to have a space to note down the stats, and traits you are granted. ##### Table of Contents [[Character Creation#Foundation|Foundation]] [[Character Creation#Lineage|Lineage]] [[Character Creation#Background|Background]] [[Character Creation#Classes|Classes]] [[Character Creation#Feats|Feats]]
## Foundation ### Ability Scores *See [[Ability Scores]] for more info.* When first making a character you must determine their baseline Ability Scores. To do this you may either used a the fixed set "15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8" or generate your own. If you wish to generate your own set, you roll 4d6 dropping the lowest value and take the total, repeating this process until you have 6 numbers. Once you have your set you assign each value to one of the following abilities. - Strength: physical might and athleticism - Dexterity: reflexes and agility - Constitution: fortitude and stamina - Intelligence: analysis and wit (Book smarts) - Wisdom: intuition and insight (Street smarts) - Charisma: confidence and eloquence The numbers you assign are your Ability Scores. Additionally, ability has a modifier determined by the following table. | Score # | Modifier | Score # | Modifier | | ------- | -------- | ------- | -------- | | 2-3 | -4 | 12-13 | +1 | | 4-5 | -3 | 14-15 | +2 | | 6-7 | -2 | 16-17 | +3 | | 8-9 | -1 | 18-19 | +4 | | 10-11 | +0 | 20-21 | +5 | At first level, if you obtain an ability score above 18, you must treat it as an 18 until your level increases (read more [[Ability Scores#^45c757|here]]).
### Proficiency *See [[Proficiency]] for more info.* Additionally, there is a measure of the growth your character experiences as they gain levels. You have a proficiency bonus, a modifier that is often used for abilities or added to checks. At first level your proficiency bonus is +2. This bonus increases every four levels (+3 at 5th, +4 at 9th, etc.). It is possible to gain proficiency in a wide array of things, including but not limited to weapons, tools, languages, and skills. The benefits of proficiency vary depending on the specific subject but are always a denotation of your grasp over that subject.
## Lineage *See [[Lineages]] for more info.* Each character has a lineage, an important aspect that guides their appearance and provides a creature type, size, speed, starting hit points, and a few lineage traits. What lineages are available to you often depends on the game's setting. Pick one, make initial decisions and note down the features and traits it grants you.
## Background *See [[Backgrounds]] for more info.* Everyone comes from somewhere, each character has a background that represents what they were involved in before the start of play. Some backgrounds are reliant on the setting so talk to your GM about how to involve your character with the world. Pick one (or generate your own), and note down the increases to stats and proficiencies it grants. Additionally you gain a [[Feats#0th-level feats|0th-level feat]] that provides you some small benefits. ## Classes ## Feats *See [[Feats]] for more info.* Feats represents special experience or training a character has undergone that grant them with power beyond what their class provides. They can change a lot of how your character works, granting increases to ability scores as well as new abilities and are a powerful customization tool. As part of character creation you only gain a feat from your [[Character Creation#Background|background]] however you gain more from your class when leveling up. %% Need to talk about
