*For those who relish the thrill of the hunt, there are only predators and prey. Be they scouts, trackers, or bounty hunters, rangers share much in common: unique mastery of specialized weapons, skill at stalking even the most elusive game, and the expertise to defeat a wide range of quarries. Knowledgeable, patient, and skilled hunters, these rangers hound man, beast, and monster alike, gaining insight into the way of the predator, skill in varied environments, and ever more lethal martial prowess. While some track man-eating creatures to protect the frontier, others pursue more cunning game—even fugitives among their own people.* ![[Pasted image 20241212072937.png]] **Role:** Ranger are deft skirmishers, either in melee or at range, capable of skillfully dancing in and out of battle. Their abilities allow them to deal significant harm to specific types of foes, but their skills are valuable against all manner of enemies. **Unleashed**: The unleashed ranger is an attempt to make the class more relevant in light of the Hunter & Slayer. In our experience, the class is generally undervalued or avoided due to the specificity of some of its abilities. In order to make the class more attractive it's power level has been increased slightly through less specific favored enemies and semi-stacking bonuses. Additionally, Hunter's Bond options have been included to reflect the classes innate flexibility as a nature-based catch all. **Alignment**: Any Neutral **Hit Die:** d10. **Starting Wealth:** 5d6 × 10 gp (average 175 gp.) He gains a +2 bonus on [Bluff](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/bluff), [Knowledge](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/knowledge), [Perception](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/perception), [Sense Motive](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/sense-motive), and [Survival](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/survival) checks against creatures of his selected type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against them. A ranger may make [Knowledge](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/knowledge) [skill checks](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills#TOC-Skill-Checks) untrained when attempting to identify these creatures. At 5th level and every five levels thereafter (10th, 15th, and 20th level), the ranger may select an additional [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-). In addition, at each such interval, the bonus against any one [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-) (including the one just selected, if so desired) increases by +2. If the ranger chooses [humanoids](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/creature-types#TOC-Humanoid) as a [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-), he must choose an associated alignment, as indicated on the table below. If the ranger chooses [outsiders](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/creature-types#TOC-Outsider)as a [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-), he must choose an associated alignment or plane. If a specific creature falls into more than one category of [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-), the ranger’s bonuses are considered 1.5x for two categories or 2x for three categories. - **Dee20 NOTE**: This is intended to help the ranger have more meaningful choices for favored enemy including classes, alignments, and planes. The semi-stacking nature equal to 1.5x should help the ranger have to decide between specializing or generalizing over an adventure. Ex: Are they hunter of LE Orc Barbarians or trapper of fey, magical beast, and dragons? | **Favored Enemy Table** | | ----------------------------------------------------- | | Aberration | | Animal | | Class (Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, etc) | | Construct | | Dragon | | Fey | | Humanoid - Alignment (G,N,E,C,L) | | Humanoid - Race (Human, Orc, Elf, etc) | | Magical Beast | | Monstrous Humanoid | | Ooze | | Outsider - Alignment (G,N,E,C,L) | | Outsider - Plane (Air, Earth, Good, Evil, Water, etc) | | Plant | | Undead | | Vermin | #### Adaptive Approach (Ex) The ranger doesn’t learn to be strong in every way. Instead, he learns to use his strengths in every way. This applies to learning as well, allowing the legendary ranger to master techniques he otherwise wouldn’t be able to. When choosing feats, if a feat requires a certain minimum ability score, the ranger can use their Wisdom score to meet that requirement. He must still meet any other requirements. In addition, the ranger counts his ranger class levels as fighter levels for the purpose of qualifying for feats. If he has levels in fighter, these levels stack. #### Hunter's Bond (Ex) At 4th level, a ranger forms a bond with his hunting companions. This bond can take one of four forms. Once the form is chosen, it cannot be changed. 1. The first is a bond to his companions. This bond allows him to spend a [move action](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Move-Actions) to grant half his [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-) bonus against a single target of the appropriate type to all allies within 30 feet who can see or hear him. This bonus lasts for a number of rounds equal to the ranger’s [Wisdom](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/ability-scores#TOC-Wisdom-Wis-) modifier (minimum 1). This bonus does not stack with any [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-) bonuses possessed by his allies; they use whichever bonus is higher. 2. The second option is to form a close bond with an [animal companion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions) or drake companion. A ranger who selects an [animal companion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions) can choose from the following list: [badger](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Badger), [bird](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Bird), [camel](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-camel), [cat (small)](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Cat-Small), [dire rat](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Rat-Dire), [dog](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Dog), [horse](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Horse), [pony](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Pony), snake ([viper](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Snake-Viper) or [constrictor](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Snake-Constrictor)), or [wolf](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions#TOC-Wolf). If the campaign takes place wholly or partly in an aquatic environment, the ranger may choose a shark instead. This animal is a loyal companion that accompanies the ranger on his adventures as appropriate for its kind. A ranger’s [animal companion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions) shares his [favored enemy](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Enemy-Ex-) and [favored terrain](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/Core-Classes/ranger/#TOC-Favored-Terrain-Ex-) bonuses. This ability functions like the [druid](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid) [animal companion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/animal-companions) ability (which is part of the Nature Bond class feature), except that the ranger’s effective [druid](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid) level is equal to his ranger level –2. 3. The third option is to develop an understanding of druidic herbalism. A ranger who chooses to learn druidic herbalism can use combinations of nuts, berries, dried herbs, and other natural ingredients along with appropriate containers to create herbal concoctions or magic consumables that function like [potions](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/potions). This acts like the [Brew Potion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/item-creation-feats/brew-potion-item-creation) feat, but only for spells on the ranger spell list. Herbal concoctions are typically thick and sludgy, and their creation time, [caster level](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Caster-Level), spell duplication capabilities, and all other variables and properties are identical to those of [potions](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/potions) created using [Brew Potion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/item-creation-feats/brew-potion-item-creation). Herbal concoctions created with herbs that cause special effects when ingested retain those effects as well as the appropriate spell effect. A ranger can create a number of free herbal concoctions per day equal to her [Wisdom](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/ability-scores#TOC-Wisdom-Wis-) modifier. Additional concoctions cost the same as creating an equivalent [potion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/potions) using [Brew Potion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/item-creation-feats/brew-potion-item-creation). Rangers can sell their herbal concoctions just as if they were [potions](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/potions) (though NPCs unfamiliar with druidic herbalism may need some convincing before purchasing these wares). At 6th level, a ranger’s increasing skill with herbalism means that she can disguise the effects of her herbal concoctions. When a creature attempts a [Perception](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/perception) or [Spellcraft](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/spellcraft) check to identify one of the druid’s concoctions, the concoction appears to be a different herbal concoction of the druid’s choice unless the creature exceeds the identification DC by 5 or more. The ranger must designate this false result when creating the concoction. If a creature exceeds the identification DC by 5 or more, it correctly identifies the concoction, though not that the druid tried to fool it. Additionally, at 6th level, when the ranger creates additional concoctions, she need pay only half the normal cost to create them. It takes her only half the normal time to create her concoctions, and she can create concoctions of spells from any spell list, as long as she can cast the spell. At 9th level, when the ranger creates concoctions with potential false identification results, a creature attempting to identify the concoction must exceed the identification DC by 10 or more to determine the concoction’s true identity. Additionally, at 9th level, a ranger can create any herbal concoction in 1 minute. She can also create a special concoction of any spell higher than 3rd level that she can cast, but to do so, she must expend a spell slot of the same level. These special concoctions do not cost her anything to create and function like extracts created by an [alchemist](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/alchemist) with the [infusion](https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/alchemist/discoveries/paizo---alchemist-discoveries/infusion) discovery. 4. The fourth option is to develop a connection to the divine and obtain a sacred weapon. This ability functions like a warpriests Sacred Weapon (Su) ability, except that the ranger's effective warpriest level is equal to his ranger level -2.
