Prioritize training over practise and practise over theory. 1. Train to **learn** something new – Do this as the first thing because you have the most energy to try something, fail and try again. 2. Practise to **strengthen** what you already know – Do this second because you still have energy to repeat and ingrain what you've trained before. 3. Read to **understand** what you're doing – Do this if you still have energy. It's okay if you miss this. This is a good process. ## Example While [[Learn writing short stories|learning to write short stories]], here's how this process applies 1. First, train: Read the next chapter and do the next and newest exercise by hand. 1. It's okay to "fail" or not be good at it yet 2. It's always a new exercise that I've never done before! 3. I make sure I have the most energy and the most motivation to do it 2. Second, practice: Go back and revisit an exercise you've done before once and do it again 1. For the first two weeks, I've focused only on practicing different strategies from [[How to generate ideas for short stories]] 2. Currently I'm revisiting [[How to write from a point of view]] to make sure I get a good grip on POVs. 3. Third, read: Learn about the bigger picture from other sources to create a deeper understanding. 1. For the first two weeks, I supplemented it with reading and taking notes from [[STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST! (Book)]] 2. To be honest, I'm not crazy about theory after training and practice, so I haven't put much energy into it. ## The process[^4] 1. Train first[^2] - Most energy needed to try something new - May look ugly - Something you've never done before - Train a NEW skill 2. Practise second[^3] - Repeat a skill you've trained a few days ago 3. Theory third - Read about it - Question it - Add new notes - Add new connections - Learn meta patterns ## Let it marinate - Then Sleep - Let it all marinate - Let it all integrate - Let it go ## Related - [[Front-load new and creative work to the morning]] - [[The First 20 Hours (Book)]] [^1]: [[Why I need structure]] [^2]: [[Practise vs. Training#Training]] [^3]: [[Practise vs. Training#Practise]] [^4]: [[Starting is Hard – Use a Process]] [^5]: [[How to generate ideas for short stories]]
