#book #challenge #skills #skillacquisition ## TED Talk Video Notes - Background: - Started a family - Your whole world changes over night - So much to learn so fast - "I will never have free time again" - Obsessed with learning new things - How long does it take to learn a new skill? - "10,000 hours" -> Noooooooo! I will never learn something new again - 10,000 hours means expert-level performance, like athletes, chess-masters, ultra-high-performing - **to get to the top of a field** - But we do acquire new skills usually faster - It does **not** take 10,000 hours to learn - The **more** you _practice_, the **faster** you can _perform_ - Looking at the _learning curve_: - x-axis Practice time - y-axis How good you are - With a little bit of practice you get good fast in the beginning - **How long does it take from not knowing something to be reasonably good?** - 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice - 45 Minutes for 1 Month - Language - Draw - "Rapid Skill Acquisition" - Practice efficiently for 20 hours - 1. "Deconstruct the skill" - Break it down into smaller pieces - What parts are the most important parts? - 2. "Learn enough to self-correct" - Don't get caught up in buying books - Learn _just enough_ to practice and self-correct - 3. "Remove practice barriers" - Distractions, TV, internet - Consistent set-up/environment - 4. "Practice at least 20 hours" - Deliberate practice - Example Learning to play the Ukulele - Get the tool set up: Strings, tuning - What are _the most important chords_ that'll cover most songs? - 4 Chords -> Axis of Awesome - Case in point: This was his 20th hour or practicing the Ukulele - What keeps us from learning something new is because we're afraid of feeling stupid - But: If you put in 20 hours, you'll get reasonably good ## Sources - https://ed.ted.com/on/Imq14bHp - https://www.amazon.com/Learn-Anything-First-Hours-Paperback/dp/B00KN8KLRG ## Related - [[100 Days Challenge]]
