What if what we believe is our curse, is ugly and messy, is really what saves us in the end?
## Background
Throughout the season, we see a zombie-ghost appearing. He's fucking scary-looking.
In episode 10 we learn his background[^2]
> It’s a busy week at the King of Tears for reasons beyond the gang war, too. Talking to her mother, Ethelrida finally gets the full story on the ghost haunting their family, who turns out to be the restless spirit of a slave ship captain killed by her great-great grandfather during a storm at sea. He’s been with the family ever since, sometimes making an appearance, sometimes making his presence known via low-tide smells and sea sounds.
And he actually saves Ethelrida from being killed by the nurse.
> But Ethelrida’s real hero, weirdly enough, turns out to be the Ghost Slaver, who shows up and scares off Oraetta shortly before Oraetta can poison her teenage nemesis. Who saw that coming? No, seriously, could anyone have seen that coming?
Another summary about how "The Roach" saves Ethelrida.
> Finally, after waiting weeks, Oraetta simply walks over to verbally accosts Ethelrida for her stolen ring. Not quite the devious plan that we could have hoped for. Ethelrida has bigger fish to fry; she’s finally told about The Roach, the ghost of a slaver that haunts Dibrell’s family, and she’s trying to save her family’s business from Loy Cannon. Ethelrida wishes to rid herself of The Roach, but the old ghost is the one that protects her from an attack by Oraetta in the middle of the night.[^1]
