"Survior guilt" is a mental condition. It occurs when a person feels guilty after surviving a traumatic event when others did not. Or a person feels guilty for the suffering of others created by a traumatic event they were not involved in. A classic is with siblings, one healthy and one disabled. The healthy sibling develops feeling guilty because they're not disabled. This leads to prioritising others' needs over ones own because "the other suffers more." So, why is this important? I suffer survivor guilt from a trans-generational trauma in my family. This guilt trickled down from my grand-mother to my [[Joyce Rondeau, Mother | mother]]. And from my mother to me. It explains why I've prioritized the needs of others over my own needs. And it explains the so-far unexplainable low self-esteem I've struggled with.
