# What The Internet Did To Garfield?
One interpretation of Garfield is as the eternal dread that you will always be a worthless snob and life will always lack meaning.
How could an innocent cat comic represent this?
For three reasons:
1. Garfield has far surpassed his original creator
2. The number 1 Garfield joke is making fun of Jon
3. The internet has changed Garfield into a horror figure
Firstly Garfield has far surpassed his creator.
The original Garfield strip wasn't called Garfield. It was called John and explored his difficulties trying to navigate the comic world scene. However, over time Garfield began to take over. Today, he sells 800-1 million dollars in profit in products every year. Once you start looking for Garfield, you start seeing him everywhere. He was able to rise to this eternal cultural icon because it his core, Garfield is simply a 3 comic strip with a punch line. Super easy to reproduce and spread.
Secondly, the number 1 Garfield joke is making fun of Jon.
Not gluttony. Not laziness. Not boredom. Making fun of John. If you take away Garfield from every comic strip, the strip feels really really sad and horrifying. It's just Jon being sad over his own existence.
And thirdly, the internet has changed Garfield into a horror figure.
Go on Reddit and you can find subreddits all about changing Garfield into Jon's worse nightmare. A demon. A representation of everyone's deeper fear of their own mind.
