### The Issues with Folder Based Structures
Traditional notetaking systems like [[Evernote]] and [[Notion]] utilize a primarily folder based structure. The issue with structures like this is they prioritize top down thinking instead of bottom up thinking.
Link based systems like [[Roam Research]] and [[Obsidian]], however, allow for ideas to grow from the bottom. In addition they give you flexibility in the case that your system changes over time because they aren't rigid architectural systems.
The notetaking revelation Nick has made is spending more of his time in a [[MOC]].
### Top down and bottom up thinking
Bi-directional links, however, allow you to explore your notes from a top down view as well as a bottom up view. You can start from a top down perspective like your Habit MOC or you can enter into a atomic note from the bottom up and make your way into a MOC over time.
This is different compared to linking structures like Wikipedia which only let you go forward and WAY more different from primarily folder based structures like Evernote.
