This means each subject is their own control. #### Types of within subject design ##### Repeated measures design Participants are exposed to one condition of the independent variable and then exposed to another one at some later time. ##### Concurrent measures design Participants are exposed to all conditions of the independent variable at the same time or in very short succession. #### Small-N Designs [[Small-N Study Design]]s utilize incredibly small sample sizes. ##### What are the issues with within subject design? Within subject design can suffer from order effects which are differences in the results simply due to the order subjects get treatments. ###### How do we fight order effects? Counterbalancing is a research technique which involves randomly varying the order of the conditions in the independent variable to avoid order effects. ^d670d2 ### Matched Pairs Design A type of experimental design in which participants are "matched" by a certain variable to control for variability in that variable and then split into two groups. It works by taking a metric for example, bench press weight or height. Then the highest two subjects for that variable are randomly assigned into either of the two groups. Next you take the second highest two subjects for that variable and randomly assign them to either two groups and etc. ### Factorial Design [[Factorial Design]] ### Quasi Experimental Design [[Quasi Experimental Design]] is an experiment in which the independent variable is not manipulated.
