# The over justification effect
When people are given rewards for things they already love doing naturally, they stop liking the activity for the activity itself.
Thus, when the reward is taken away people don't like doing it for the sake of the activity itself.
In other words, the reward over justified the need to do the activity because people already did it for the intrinsic reward of the activity itself.
This is significant because it implies you shouldn't give rewards to people to do things they already like doing intrinsically, unless you want to sabotage their liking of it in which case by all means go ahead you devil!
But rewards to get someone to do something they already enjoy are okay in moderation.
