# Self-suppression versus self-expansion
There are two different kinds of immersion in an activity: self-suppression and self-expansion.
Self-suppression is immersion done to escape from a negative feeling or thought. Self-expansion is immersion done to learn something new, improve a skill, achieve a goal, reenergize, or strengthen a relationship. While it also involves escaping from reality for a while it brings benefits to reality after the escape.
