What is [[Social facilitation]]? :: Social facilitation is the tendency to be more aroused when when you're aware others are evaluating you which increases the likelihood of the dominant response. i.e. you are more likely to do what you already want to do. It occurs sometimes not only when organisms are competing with you but also when there is an audience watching. <!--SR:!2022-09-01,7,250--> Three Elements of Zajonc's theory 1. You are more aroused when in the presence of other people 2. Physiological arousal increases the likelihood of the dominant response. i.e. you are more likely to do what you already want to do. 3. For well learned tasks performance is increased where as for novel tasks your performance is hurt. What was shown through Zajonc's cockroach experiment? Cockroaches are positively social facilitated when running away from a light in a easy to learn manner where as they are negatively socially facilitated when they have to run away from a light in a difficult novel manner. There are some exceptions to social facilitation. For example, peeing takes longer when there are others around you. Is it the mere presence of someone or the awareness that someone else is evaluating you that affects social facilitation? The presence of someone else that isn't evaluating you doesn't effect social facilitation What are the implications of everything we have learned about social facilitation?
