up: [[Stoicism MOC]] # Protopassion Protopassions are the kneejerk momentary emotions that spring up after a particularly arousing event. For example, getting pushed at the grocery store. The Stoics advocate you should wait to react on your protopassions so that you can act with reason. The way I differentiate between what is a protopassion and what is a longer term emotion is by waiting for a few seconds in a situation where I'm probably not in immediate danger. If the emotion leaves after that amount of time it was almost certainly a protopassion where if it doesn't it's a longer term emotion I should probably think more actively on. ###### Is there a time to act on protopassions? If your in a situation where legitimate danger is possible, it can be good to act on instinctual protopassions because they are meant to get you out of danger in a pinch.
