# Notemaking
"Not all those who wander are lost." - J.R.R. Tolkien
Notemaking emphasizes active engagement with information and the connection of ideas. It was originally coined by [[Nick Milo]] who describes it as the anti-productivity approach to PKM.
It contrasts with [[Notetaking]] which is the traditional form of taking notes most people still use nowadays.
Notemaking functions off of The Joy Of Missing Out (JOMO) rather than The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). You won't consume as much information by making notes in your own words and connecting ideas. But that's okay. The [[Journey before destination|journey]] of learning is more important than the destination.

## How Can You Start Notemaking?
"The best ideas are ones you already have. You just have to revisit them." - Nick Milo
- [[What should you take notes on|learn what you should take notes on in the first place]].
- Creating a developing tag. A tag that signifies a note needs to be processed like 📩 or fleshed out like 🌱. See my [[Tag Taxonomy]] for how I do this.
- Exploring through a [[MOC]] or Atomic Note. You can start from a top down perspective like your Habit MOC or you can enter into a atomic note from the bottom up and make your way into a MOC over time.
- Creating a new MOC. See my writing on [[How I Organize Obsidian with Maps of Content (MOCs)]] to learn more.
- Using the Graph View. See [[How to use the Obsidian graph view for notemaking]]
- Link your thinking. I write about [[How should you link your notes|how to link your notes here]].
I talk more about how I apply notemaking into my own PKM system particularly in schoolwork through my article [[This Obsidian Notetaking Method Made Me Love School Again]].
When should you notemake? Personally I don't set out a time. I believe you should practice [[Efforts over projects when developing ideas]]. Notemaking should feel like play. It's not a job.
### Notemaking is a method of Gamification
Notemaking is a method of gamifying your notetaking habit. Normal notetaking doesn't spark an incredible sense of joy and wonder.
In fact, most goals in real life have such a long feedback loop that it can be hard to motivate yourself to do them. But notemaking allows you to shorten the feedback loop to pursuing your learning goals. Even if you only create one note in a day or add on to one thing you have already created, you have made progress.
The parts of my brain that love figuring out the optimal tech tree advancement in Civilization 6 or finding the best item combinations in Terraria are the same parts that get activated by figuring out the best way to link a note inside of my system.
The same parts of my brain that love collecting League of Legends skins love amassing a compounding body of notes formed from the connections of my own unique information diet.
