It manifests itself through two realms: 1. The cognitive realm 2. The social realm ### The Cognitive Realm [[We respond to our subjective interpretation of things, not reality]]. However, we believe our perspective of reality is the objective one called the [[Objectivity illusion]]. But our perception of reality isn't accurate. This is shown through three main things: - [[Our memories of the past are inaccurate]] - [[Our perceptions of the present are skewed]] - [[Our imaginations of the future are often wrong]] We judge others relative to our own judgements of the world. But because we see the world through the lens of our unique background and [[Self]], we judge the objective world subjectively different (see: [[People form differing objects of attention when observing the same environment]]). Solomon Asch, stressed the importance of distinguishing between different “judgments of the object” and different “objects of judgment.” [[Disagreements often arise from two people arguing over different objects of judgement rather than differing judgements of the same object]]. ## The Social Realm What we believe is good, bad, or evil isn't truly but rather made so by the social realm. If people believe things are real then they will have real consequences. ### When is this more likely to occur? The more potential objects of judgement there are to look at, the more likely this is to occur. This is similar to [[The false consensus effect]] which is the phenomenon by which generally we believe our choices in situations are more common among others than they actually are. ### How do we stop Naive realism? Unfortunately, it's not possible to stop. But we don't want to anyways. [[Emotions, heuristics, and cognitive biases are good things]]. We should become aware of our [[Heuristics]], [[Ego]], and cognitive biases and try and predict the situations in which they will be maladaptive so that we can be mindful of them in those scenarios. For example, if someone does something strange, ask if there is a product of their environment that might have prompted the change rather than their personality. One definition of [[Wisdom MOC]] could be an understanding that everyone in the world is a naive realist. Related: [[Dunning Kruger Effect]] ___
