# MOC
A map of content is a summation of a bunch of other related notes.
### When do you create a MOC?
There are two scenarios you create a MOC:
1. You reach a critical mass of disorganization in your notetaking system non as a [[Mental squeeze point]] and simply have to create a MOC.
2. You begin your entrance into a new topic by creating a MOC with the different things you would like to learn and flesh it out as you learn more and more.
# How Do You Create a MOC? The Five Levels of Emergence
[[Nick Milo]] describes a five levels of emergence that exemplify the steps to MOC creation. [^1]
**Emergence Level 1:**
All MOCs start out as singular notes. And singular notes come from the nothingness of fleeting thoughts.

**Emergence Level 2:**
In this level notes start to link to other notes. Relationships are formed.

**Emergence Level 3:**
There comes a point in the process where you will want a birds eye view of the relationships between the notes you are connecting together.
This is when the MOC creation process begins.
There is a gathering, assembling, and incubating of information relevant to the MOC. Usually, this gathering will start out as a list of bi-directionally linked notes. Eventually you might turn this simple list into a paragraph structure.
**Emergence Level 4:**
At this level MOCs are linked to MOCs! Your in the colliding phase of MOC creation and linking your MOCs to other MOCs. This allows you to fly around your note library rapidly organically getting unforced behavior based [[Spaced repetition]].

**Emergence Level 5:**
The highest level of emergence comes when you create a Home Note with all of your highest order notes. The home note is your beginning and end, your launchpad and homebase.

When your MOCs are fleshed out enough to be used for a navigational purpose they are in the MOC Navigation stage. In this stage they can be used for three things:
- for final products (content creation)
- as a reference point in the future, as a navigational hub
- for the inherent joy the ideas provide.
Your home note allows for simultaneous top down thinking by looking at your system from the home note or bottom up thinking by creating atomic notes and adding them to MOCs linked to your home note.
### Benefits of MOC organized systems
- MOC organized systems reduce the need for folders. Instead you can use links as your primary organization feature.
- MOCs allow you to see the relationship between seemingly unrelated ideas.
- MOCs allow you to think bottom up and top down.
- MOCs allow you to do the thinking and linking **first** and the organization later once the disorganization becomes overwhelming.
