# Tricks For Reading Faster
### Stop subvocalization
Subvocalization is the reading of words in your head even if not out loud. It significantly reduces the speed at which you can read. But it does increase comprehension. This means you should subvocalize and slow down when reading hard to understand text and stop subvocalizing to speed up on easier text.
### Use peripheral vision
If you try and start reading a little inward of the very outside of sentences your peripheral vision will read the outside words for you allowing you to speed up.
### Chunk words
Read easier to understand words in groups. This means you will naturally read in short bursts. You measure the degree of chunking in these bursts based on the difficulty of the words or the subject.
### Give yourself time to rest
If you never give yourself a time to rest your eyes and mind while reading, you will actually read slower because you will have to stop and take a real break shorter. Therefore it's better to read slightly slower at the expense of short term speed for longer term reading speed.
When you reach a point that makes sense in the text, usually every paragraph or so, give yourself a few seconds to rest and reflect on what you just read. This will actually increase reading comprehension and allow you to prepare for deeper [[Encoding]] by giving you time to question where you think the text is going to go.
Research shows having a question in mind while you read like those created in the [[SQ3R Framework]] increases retention and comprehension afterward.
