# Hitting the grind
When we first start making progress on any goal there is a initial step of "newbie gains" in which we experience rapid progress.
This is often the period with the highest motivation and least effort needed. We experience rapid improvement in results with minimal effort invested. However, inevitably we hit the point at which our newbie gains start to go away, and we begin to see less and less results despite increasing effort. The lowest point of this curve is what I call "hitting the grind." I call it this because in many video games there are points where we have to spend exorbidant amounts of effort and time grinding for better gear or levels with minimal improvement just so we can get the next achievement.
The period leading up to the grind and the grind itself is the point in which people are most in danger of quitting. However, if they can just stick it out a little longer, they can start experiencing upsized results again with increased effort.
