Emergence explains why some systems have properties that are greater than the sum of their parts. You cannot understand them from studying their individual components, which may be simple but which interact in unpredictable, nonlinear ways. For example, looking at an individual note inside of a [[Zettelkasten]] system won't teach you how those notes interact to form things that aren't anything like the individual notes.
