# Availability heuristic
We tend to judge the size of a category and the likelihood of an event based on how easily and strongly it comes to mind.
###### What is the difference between availability and fluency?
The easier information is to generate, the larger or more likely it seems. This is different from fluency as fluency relates rather to how easy an information is to process.
This heuristic plays a lot with the [[Hidden data problem]] because the things that are available to use are only things that we are aware of.
###### How does this effect cause us to see hardship?
We tend to notice our hardships much more than our easy going periods (see: [[Headwinds tailwinds effect]]). They are more available in our mind.
Effects that come from this heuristic:
- [[Exposure effect]]
- [[Overclaiming effect]]
- [[Headwinds tailwinds effect]]
- [[We are way better at lying them detecting lies]]
- [[We tend to underestimate how social we are compared to others]]
- [[Conjunction fallacy]]
- [[Death in Social Psychology#Humans have a biased assessment of danger]]
