# Stoicism and Buddhism
### Judgements of Events:
- Stoic approach: [[Your judgements of events hurt you, not the events themselves]]. Understand the [[Dichotomy of control]]. You should focus mainly on that which is in your control. While you can attempt to influence things outside of your control, you shouldn't put your wellbeing on it.
- Tantrayanic Buddhist Approach: [[Tantrayanic correct view of emptiness]] comes with realizing there is not a speck of self-existence in anything. The only reason anything is anything is because of our mind. So we shouldn't put undue credence on our perception of things.
### Coming To Terms With Desire
- Stoic approach: [[Preferred Indifference]]
- Buddhist approach: [[Renunciation]]
### Approach to Kindness
Both the Stoics and Buddhists believed bettering the world through kindness was a core part of good living.
The Buddhists called this mindset [[Bodhicchita]].
Importantly, both philosophies tout that you can do this before you are actually fully realized in yourself. It's an excuse to say you won't help others until you have become perfect inside.
### Developing Your Character
In both Stoicism and Buddhism, developing your character is touted.
In Stoicism they touted overcoming base biological instincts. To do this the Stoics practiced overcoming your [[Protopassion]]s.
In the Buddhist practice of Tantrayana it's called developing your internal Guru which involves coming to a deep understanding of yourself.
### Finding Mentors
In both Stoicism and Budhism finding mentors to help you along the process is essential.
In Stoicism mentors were found among the living, among the dead, and also embodied in the fictitious perfect Stoic practitioner, the [[Stoic sage]]. They follow every tenet of Stoicism perfectly. As a Stoic, your goal is to practice coming closer to the Stoic sage but never to truly reach him. It's not possible.
In the Buddhist practice of Tantrayana it's called developing your external Guru, finding a mentor that you feel embodies what you want out of the practice and to use them as a guide.
### Contemplating Death
In both Budhhism and Stoicism, contemplating death is a very important method for brining clarity to ones actions and an appreciation to ones day.
