[[History of Stoicism]]
# Main Tenets of Stoicism
The three fundamental aspects of stoicism are:
- Perception: foster perceptions of the world that align with reality
- Action: do good actions for the right reasons
- Will: have the will to continue doing good action even in the face of difficulty and your tendency for self deception
[[The Stoics saw wisdom as separating meaning from event.]]. To do this they created a [[The dichotomy of control|dichotomy of control]]. You should focus mainly on that which is in your control. While you can attempt to influence things outside of your control, you shouldn't put your wellbeing on it.
It is [[Your judgements of events hurt you, not the events themselves]].
### Virtue
Stoics believed things which improved the character higher than those that only affect the body. They shunned desires like those for extravagant food, water, sex, money, etc. However, they didn't shun desire entirely but rather practiced [[Preferred Indifference]].
Instead of desire, the Stoics believed the acting out of virtues was more important:
- Kindness
- Temperance
- Courage
- Wisdom
- Patience
- Curiosity
- And more
They saw growing character as more important than the body because [[No person is a slave who is free in their will]]. [[An event can harm you only if it harms your character]].
They believed [[Everlasting happiness comes from living a life in accordance with virtue]].
How and when can you build virtue?
- [[You can practice virtue in any situation]]
- [[Masochism isn't the path to virtue]]
- [[The truly heroic person is the one that shows virtue when no one is watching]]
Another major tenet of Stoicism was the idea of overcoming base biological instincts and building your character. To do this the Stoics practiced overcoming your [[Protopassion]].
How Stoicism Differs From The Other Philosophies At The Time
- [[The Cynics believed that the primary thing that brought suffering was setting our heart on the wrong things.]] The Stoics believed it was rather HOW we set our heart on things that mattered.

Criticisms of Stoicism
- [[Develop a thick core instead of a thick skin]]
- [[Some critics say Stoicism puts too little emphasis on why you feel the way you do]]
- [[Stoicism doesn’t put enough emphasis on intuition and emotion like the force does]]
