For:
- Some crimes are so heinous they deserve it
- Some claim it deters harsher crimes
- There isn’t a statistical difference in crime rates correlated with the death penalty between U.S. states.
- One could say it’s cause the death penalty isn’t extreme enough and takes too long which is why it doesn’t deter.
- Goes back to killing more innocents as a result. Also, assumes most criminals are lucidly thinking through their consequences and options when doing crime. Many criminals are acting on impulse, not logically thinking through what will happen to them.
- The person doing the crime is likely to do more crime upon exiting
- It gives healing to the relationships of the person likely murdered when their murderer is killed.
- There’s no evidence it provides healing.
Against:
- No opportunity for rehabilitation
- Sometimes there’s false sentencing and if discovered innocent afterward there’s nothing you can do for the person. False accusing an innocent could get more and more likely as AI video tools come out. So it’s better to air on caution if we believe in innocent until proven guilty.
- Costs a lot. It’s actually more expensive to execute someone then put them in life in prison. You could say it should be done faster but the reason it takes so long is to make sure mistakes don’t happen in the process.
- A life is priceless
- Effects people of disadvantaged and low socio-economic groups more often
- Government shouldn’t have that degree of power
