# Analog PKM
Not to be confused with [[Resources/PKM/AnalogTheSimplestProductivitySystem|AnalogTheSimplestProductivitySystem]].
While my main note repository and second brain is on the computer, that doesn’t always work when you’re out in the world.
I've successfully used three analog PKMs:
- A Field Notes notebook with one or two notebooks - it’s small enough to live in my front pocket.
- [[Resources/PKM/Analog/BulletJournal|Bullet journals]]
- [[Resources/PKM/Analog/TravelerPassport|Traveler Passport]] notebooks that can live in my back pocket.
###### A note about covers
I used to be a big fan of index card folders in my notebooks, but in reality, they present an uneven surface to write on. I find it’s better to not have the folder, and maybe keep a few note cards stashed somewhere if I need them, though in my pocket notebook I do keep a folder with a few thin (almost too-thin) lined index cards to track journal and commonplace notebook topics.

I have three (with a bonus fourth) notebooks right now:
- The [[Resources/PKM/Analog/TravelerPassport|TravelerPassport]] is my everyday pocket notebook. I virtually always keep this on my person, along with a [[Resources/Pens/KawecoSport|Kaweco Bronze Sport]] pen, inked with [[Resources/Pens/Ink/PlatinumCarbon|PlatinumCarbon]].
- I have a journal that I use for long-form thinking and synthesis.
- I use a Moleskine Expanded large hardcover notebook as a [[Resources/PKM/CommonplaceBook|CommonplaceBook]].
- Bonus: I use a [Mark’s 5 Years Diary](https://www.jetpens.com/Mark-s-5-Years-Diary-Camel/pd/33476) to track stuff over time; I started mine in 2023.
All four of these (plus my Kaweco travel pouch with my collection of [[Resources/Pens/KawecoSport|KawecoSports]], extra [[Resources/Pens/Ink/PlatinumCarbon|ink]], and notebook refill) fit into my [[Resources/Adventure/Gear/BritishMarkVIISatchel|BritishMarkVIISatchel]] when I want to go somewhere to write and think.
I use the pocket notebook to capture things when I’m out and about; that feeds into the commonplace book. I can reflect on what I’ve captured in my journal, maybe synthesizing that into an article or essay.
In a lot of ways, the commonplace book is my analog second brain, though I also do synthesis in places here.
