This movie is a marvel. I hadn't seen it in maybe 10 years and watched it in preparation for Wicked coming out.
I am a large David Lynch fan and for a while I had heard that this is one of his favorite movies. After watching it again, I can see all over how it influenced him in all of his movies. The section of Dorothy in Oz is a pure dream; all characters are representations of how Dorothy sees them in her own life, everything is heightened in both color and sound, and the songs full of emotion. Like [[Mulholland Drive]], this movie's dream section begins with someones head hitting a pillow/bed. I am not sure what could be more inspirational than that.
In a recent discussion on the r/Blankies subreddit, a user mentioned that in [[The Straight Story]], the section where Alvin Straight shares his camp fire/food with the teenage runaway named Crystal is a reference/evocation of the scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy finds Professor Marvel. Both Dorothy and Crystal each are running away from family for different reasons, but both Professor Marvel and Alvin use their powers to convince the girls that their family misses them no matter the circumstances. That was one of the most powerful sections of The Straight Story and it made me feel more connected to The Wizard of Oz on this rewatch.
I need to watch [[Lynch/Oz]], that is currently on The Criterion Channel.
Everyone being in the sepia/Kansas section are fantasy characters in Oz. Its quite obvious on a rewatch but I was oblivious to it when I first watched it.
Each character is so distinct and fun, I appreciate their lightness and vaudevillian expressiveness. Every song is a banger except the lions king song, that I can take or leave. The production design is very evocative and each alternate decision to the book like the red slippers instead of just crystal slippers remains iconic.
I love this movie and will continue to love it
