## Description
Subotai the Ranger - Escaped slavery, forced to fight as a gladiator, with [[Thorag Stonefist|Thorag]] and fled to [[Rexxentrum]]
Subotai is a competent tracker doing work for [[the Cobalt Soul]].
Travelled to [[Alfield]] to investigate the strange things going on, and mentions of an unknown object. His disappearance while searching for an artifact became one of the party's earliest concerns, with [[Thorag Stonefist|Thorag]] fearing the worst as clues about cult activity in the town mounted.
When the party infiltrated the caverns beneath the [[Temple of Pelor]] during [[Wildemount Session 6|Session 6]], they discovered Subotai's empty cell. Beneath a broken Harper pin he had scratched a coded message: "Eyes open in shadow. The coil awakens where the roots drink deep. Trust the quiet path. I still move. I still see." Nearby, the party recovered [[Subotai's Bloodied Journal]], branded with the [[the Cobalt Soul|Cobalt Soul]] sigil, which described the cult's forbidden rituals, biological transformations, a beacon, and a hatchery. His journal also contained a hand-drawn map with an "X" marking a probable ritual site deep in the forest -- intelligence that proved critical in guiding the party to the cult's marsh base.
During [[Wildemount Session 7|Session 7]], the stablemaster [[Durmas]] confirmed that [[Father Aldric]] and [[Jareth Stonevein|Jareth]] had recently rented horses, and the party used Subotai's map to navigate northeast into the woods toward the cult outpost. Though Subotai himself was not found at the marsh base, the evidence he left behind made the rescue of [[Mikey Baywood]] possible.
By [[Wildemount Session 13|Session 13]], Subotai had resurfaced and reunited with the party at the surface after the destruction of the [[the Blackroot Faithful]] camp, greeting them alongside [[Volothamp Geddarm|Volo]] with relief and fresh air. He continued travelling with the group as they departed [[Alfield]] and set out for [[Zadash]] in [[Wildemount Session 14|Session 14]], riding alongside [[Volothamp Geddarm|Volo]] and the party through encounters with goblin refugees, a Bane-worshipping cult, and the rescue of [[Wip]]. In [[Wildemount Session 15|Session 15]], Subotai and Volo again greeted the party at the surface after they emerged from the underground compound, and together they pressed on toward [[Zadash]]. During [[Wildemount Session 16|Session 16]], Subotai travelled with the group along the [[Amber Road]], surviving an ambush by mercenaries sent by [[Brutus III]] to capture [[Thorag Stonefist|Thorag]], and passing through the ruins of a [[the Cerberus Assembly|Cerberus Assembly]] tower.
In [[Wildemount Session 22|Session 22]], High Archivist [[Balsashi]] revealed that the Dawnstar fragments -- three shards of a relic shattered during [[the Calamity]] -- had once been sold by exiled soldier [[Tasio Sorn]], and that Subotai had pursued rumors of these fragments before vanishing. This confirmed that Subotai's original mission to [[Alfield]] was connected to the broader mystery of the Dawnstar.
By [[Wildemount Session 36|Session 36]], Subotai shared troubling intelligence with the party about the [[Srios Mountains]], where strange atmospheric phenomena and bodies that refused to stay dead had been reported. His lead urged the group to investigate further, and his warnings highlighted the growing threat of supernatural forces destabilizing the natural cycle of death and memory. With information from both Subotai and [[Balsashi]], the party prepared to leave [[Zadash]] for their next destination.
